The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved a generic version of the drug Viagra, also known as sildenafil, as the first oral treatment option for erectile dysfunction.
The new drug has the same active ingredient as the older, cheaper, generic drug, which has a similar safety profile.
It’s designed to be sold in generic form. That means the drug won’t be available until the 2023 expiration of a patent.
The drug is also approved for use in men with impotence and for treatment of premature ejaculation.
“This is an important step forward in our effort to develop a new treatment option for erectile dysfunction,” said Janet Woodcock, who leads the FDA’s medical research group on drugs.
“We are very pleased to approve the development of this drug for men with erectile dysfunction. It’s an important step forward in our efforts to bring this drug to market, and to address the growing problem of ED in this country.”
The drug is sold in pill form and will be available as an oral tablet in Canada starting in late 2024. Viagra is one of only two oral treatments for erectile dysfunction in the U. S. alone.
